Which grow light do you need?
- Houseplants and herbs in a dim corner. A strip light or a small bar is usually enough. SunBlaster LED strip lights and T5 LED conversion lamps mount under a shelf; AC Infinity Ionbeam bars and the Spider Farmer SF300 and SF600 suit one or two plants.
- Seedlings and microgreens. Low, even light across the whole tray beats one bright point. Strip lights and small bars sit well here.
- A 2x2 or 2x4 grow tent. Look at 100-300 W boards and bars: the AC Infinity Ionboard and Ionframe range, the Spider Farmer SF1000 and SF2000.

How high above the plants?
Every fixture comes with its own hanging chart, and that chart beats any rule of thumb. As a starting point: strip lights and small bars sit roughly 6 to 12 inches above the canopy, 100-300 W boards about 18 to 24 inches, and 400 W and up about 24 to 36 inches, lowered as the plants establish. If leaves bleach pale, curl at the edges or the growing tips tighten up, the light is too close.
How many hours a day?
Most plants need a dark period, because a large part of their growing happens in it, so running a light 24 hours a day is rarely the right answer. As a guide: seedlings and leafy greens do well on 14 to 16 hours, houseplants and herbs on 12 to 14 hours, and photoperiod crops being flowered on 10 to 12 hours with the dark period left uninterrupted. A simple timer is the cheapest piece of equipment in any grow.
Full spectrum, PPFD and efficacy, in plain terms
Full spectrum means the fixture covers the whole visible range rather than the old blue-and-red mix. It is far easier to work and inspect plants under, and it suits plants at every stage.
PPFD is how much usable light actually reaches the canopy at a given height, measured in micromoles per square metre per second. It is a far better number to compare than wattage, because two 300 W fixtures can deliver very different amounts of light to the plants.
Efficacy, measured in micromoles per joule, is how much of that light you get per watt of electricity. Higher is cheaper to run: a fixture at 2.5 umol/J uses about a quarter less power than one at 1.9 umol/J to put the same light on your plants.
LED, HPS or CMH?
LEDs run cooler, last longer and use less electricity for the same amount of light, which is why they have become the default for indoor growing. HPS and CMH still have their place: they cost less up front, put out plenty of light, and the extra heat is sometimes welcome in a cold Canadian room.
