Grow Room Glasses
Grow room glasses do two jobs at once. They cut the glare and UV that make a few hours under a 1000 W lamp genuinely uncomfortable, and they correct the colour cast so you can see your plants as they really are. Under HPS the whole room is orange; under an older magenta LED everything is purple. Either way you cannot spot a deficiency, a pest or the first grey fuzz of mildew, because the colour information is not reaching your eye. Canada Grow Supplies stocks Method Seven, Active Eye, Wachsen Professional and AC Infinity. Orders of $149 or more of eligible items ship free within Canada.
Match the lens to your light, not to your taste
This is the one thing that decides which pair you want. Each lens is tuned to the spectrum it has to correct, and the wrong one makes colour harder to read rather than easier.
HPS. A sodium lamp throws a narrow orange-yellow band. HPS lenses pull it back towards neutral. Method Seven Cultivator HPS PLUS+, Operator HPS PLUS+ and Resistance Perfect Color HPS are built for this, as are the Active Eye HPS grow room lenses.
White full-spectrum LED. Modern white LED is closer to daylight but still very bright. Method Seven Cultivator LED PLUS+ and Classic LED FX cut the intensity while keeping colours close to true.
Blurple LED. The older red-and-blue fixtures need their own correction: Method Seven Classic Blurple and Aviator Blurple.
Metal halide. Method Seven Operator MH PLUS+.
Sun and greenhouse. Method Seven Resistance Sun and Evolution Sun are polarized sunglasses rather than grow-room lenses, for work outside or under glass.
Do you actually need them?
If you spend ten minutes a week in the room, probably not. If you work under the lights, inspecting, trimming, training and diagnosing, then yes, for two reasons.
The first is comfort. Grow lamps are bright enough to cause eye strain and headaches over a working session, and HID lamps emit UV that nothing in a standard pair of glasses is filtering.
The second is practical. Almost every growing problem is diagnosed by colour: yellowing between the veins, a bronze cast on older leaves, the grey fuzz of powdery mildew, the fine stippling of spider mites. None of it reads correctly under orange or magenta light, which is why problems that are obvious in daylight get missed for a week in the tent.
Clip-ons for people who already wear glasses
If you wear a prescription, the clip-on versions sit over your own frames: Aviator HPS, Aviator Blurple, Classic Blurple and Classic LED FX.
Photographing plants under grow lights
A phone camera is fooled by grow-light spectrum exactly as your eye is, which is why tent photos come out orange or purple. Method Seven makes camera photo filters in the same LED and HPS corrections, so the picture shows what the plant actually looks like. That matters if you keep a grow diary, or if you send photos to someone for a second opinion.
